GENERAL MACHINE ENGINEER – Tomah workshop Sheffield
Full time role, directly reporting to the Production Manager.

Manufacturing Operations
Tomah Engineers is a well-established machining workshop, which has a good reputation within the domestic engineering market.
The current manufacturing operations provides high-quality products for the medium / heavy engineering sectors, working on one off and small batch quantity customer orders.
There is a small team of skilled machine operators working on lathes, horizontal borers, XYZ millers and slotting machines as well as basic assembly operations.There are plans to
introduce technical apprentices to the team later in 2026.
The existing plant is in good condition with a recent investment in a new 6.5m long bed lathe and further plant investments are possible to achieve the business strategy.
 
Role Outline
The company is looking to recruit an experienced general machinist with expertise in lathe turning.
Knowledge and experience on operating other machinery such as the Horizontal Boring machines, Millers and Driller is preferable.
Become a member of busy production team working within an organised system but with a strong emphasis on autonomy in getting the work done. The candidate will need to
be well organised within their working environment.
 
Day to day Responsibilities;
  • Report to the Production Manager for job allocation.
  • Perform safe operation on the variety of machines which we have in our workshop.
  • Undertake various preventative maintenance tasks on the machines.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering manufacturing drawings.
  • Perform in-process inspections.
  • Adhere to the company’s health and Safety systems.
  • Complete all work tasks within a time efficient period.
  • Can safely use the overhead pendant crane.
  • Ensure their working area is clean and tidy by the end of each shift.

Monthly Responsibilities;
  • Take active part in the monthly production team meetings offering comment and advice when required.
  • Undertake any necessary technical and safety training courses, when required.
  • Ensure all necessary plant maintenance duties are undertaken and report any issues to the Production Manager.
  • Contribute to the general housekeeping of the overall workshop is maintained to a high level.
  • Be active in identifying and addressing any production bottlenecks.
Candidates Professional Requirements.
  • 5+ years’ working experience of operating lathes and milling machines.
  • Relevant technical qualifications.
  • Sound technical knowledge of engineering and machining operations.
  • Knowledge and experience of working within health and safety policy.
  • Have a strong team ethos offering advise and support when needed.
  • Good, relaxed communicator, with a positive mindset.
  • Punctual and a good self-starter with their work tasks.

MACHINING APPRENTICE VACANCY

We are delighted to be lookng to recruit our very first machining apprentice at Tomah Engineers in 2026, in co-operation with the team at the AMRC in Catcliffe, we looking for a young person, who has a genuine interest in engineering and they are wanting to learn the skills required to successfully operate conventional machinery to a high standard, machinery such as lathes, milling, drilling and horizontal boring machines.

The successful candidate will initally attend the basic engineering training program at the AMRC prior to joining our production team full time.

As a company we offer full support and a structured training program which will compliment and build on the training undertaken at the AMRC. We have a clear focus to nurture and provide the necessary support to develop our young talent to become fully competant at the end of the training program and then to go on and enjoy an engineering career based on a solid skills foundation
